Carpet Fiber Types and the Best Cleaning Methods

Why Fiber Type Determines Everything About Carpet Cleaning

Would you wash a silk blouse the same way you wash a cotton t-shirt? Of course not. Yet many Jacksonville homeowners clean their carpet without knowing what fiber it's made of β€” and the wrong method can cause shrinking, browning, color bleeding, or fiber damage that's irreversible. At Clean Fix Jax, identifying carpet fiber type is the first step in every carpet cleaning appointment, and it determines our entire approach.

Here's a comprehensive guide to every major carpet fiber type, its characteristics, and the cleaning methods that produce the best results in Jacksonville's humid climate.

The Big Five Carpet Fibers

Nylon

Nylon is the most popular carpet fiber, accounting for about 60% of all carpet sold. It's incredibly resilient β€” nylon fibers bounce back from compression better than any other fiber, making it ideal for high-traffic areas. Nylon accepts dye beautifully, holds its color well, and resists abrasion. The downside: nylon stains relatively easily unless treated with a stain protector. In Jacksonville, nylon's biggest vulnerability is its tendency to absorb moisture and hold it, which increases drying time after cleaning.

  • Best cleaning method: Hot water extraction at 180-200Β°F with a pH 9-10 synthetic detergent
  • Avoid: Bleach-based products (weaken fibers), overly acidic cleaners (can cause color shift)
  • Drying time: 6-8 hours in Jacksonville's humidity

Polyester (PET)

Polyester carpet is made from recycled plastic bottles and has excellent stain resistance β€” most spills bead up on the surface rather than absorbing. It's less resilient than nylon, meaning it mats and crushes in traffic areas. Polyester is hydrophobic (doesn't absorb water), so it dries faster after cleaning. However, it attracts oily soils that create persistent dark traffic lanes, especially in Jacksonville where body oils and cooking grease are constant contaminants.

  • Best cleaning method: Hot water extraction with an oleophilic (oil-attracting) pre-spray to break down bonded oils, followed by standard extraction
  • Avoid: High-alkaline cleaners that can degrade the fiber, excessive agitation that accelerates matting
  • Drying time: 4-6 hours in Jacksonville's humidity

Olefin (Polypropylene)

Olefin is the most moisture-resistant carpet fiber β€” it literally cannot absorb water, which makes it popular for outdoor carpets and basements. It's also bleach-resistant, meaning you can use stronger cleaning solutions without damaging the fiber. However, olefin has the poorest resilience of any fiber β€” it crushes under traffic and never recovers. It also has the lowest melting point (around 300Β°F), so friction from dragging furniture or even aggressive vacuum beater bars can literally melt the fibers. In Jacksonville Beach homes, olefin is common because it resists fading from sun exposure.

  • Best cleaning method: Hot water extraction with an oil-breaking pre-spray. Olefin can tolerate bleach solutions for severe staining
  • Avoid: High-friction cleaning that can melt fibers, hot water above 160Β°F (can cause permanent texture change)
  • Drying time: 2-4 hours β€” olefin doesn't absorb moisture, so it dries fastest

Wool

Wool is the premium carpet fiber β€” naturally stain-resistant, fire-resistant, and beautiful. But wool requires the most careful cleaning of any fiber. Alkaline cleaners strip wool's natural lanolin, leaving fibers brittle and rough. Hot water above 120Β°F causes wool to shrink and felt. Bleach dissolves wool completely. If you have wool carpet in your St. Augustine or Orange Park home, it requires a cleaner who specializes in wool β€” standard carpet cleaning methods will damage it.

  • Best cleaning method: Low-moisture extraction with pH-neutral (7.0-7.5) wool-safe detergent, water temperature below 120Β°F
  • Avoid: Alkaline cleaners (pH above 8), hot water above 120Β°F, bleach, enzyme cleaners, oxygen-based cleaners
  • Drying time: 12-24 hours β€” wool absorbs up to 30% of its weight in water and releases it slowly

Triexta (SmartStrand)

The newest major carpet fiber, triexta is a polyester derivative with significantly better resilience than standard polyester. It's marketed as stain-resistant for the life of the carpet β€” the stain resistance is built into the fiber rather than applied as a surface treatment. In Jacksonville homes, triexta performs well but requires specific cleaning techniques to maintain its stain resistance and texture.

  • Best cleaning method: Hot water extraction with a pH 8-9 detergent. Avoid high-alkaline pre-sprays
  • Avoid: Cationic cleaners (fabric softeners, some spot removers) that neutralize the built-in stain resistance
  • Drying time: 4-6 hours

How to Identify Your Carpet Fiber

If you don't know what fiber your carpet is, you can identify it with a simple burn test. Pull a few fibers from an inconspicuous area (like a closet corner) and hold them with tweezers over a non-flammable surface. Light them and observe:

  • Nylon: Melts and burns with a celery-like smell. Forms a hard bead when cooled
  • Polyester: Burns quickly with a sweet chemical smell. Forms a hard, shiny bead
  • Olefin: Burns slowly with a wax-like smell. Forms a hard, round bead
  • Wool: Burns slowly with a hair-burning smell. Forms a crushable ash. Self-extinguishes when flame is removed

Or simply check the carpet sample you received at purchase β€” the fiber content is listed on the label.
