The Spaces Nobody Cleans
When was the last time you pulled your refrigerator away from the wall? Or looked under your oven? If you're like most Jacksonville homeowners, the answer is "never" or "not since we moved in." The spaces behind and under your appliances are some of the dirtiest, most neglected areas in any home β and in Florida's climate, they're also some of the most dangerous.
Grease, moisture, and warmth behind appliances create perfect conditions for pests, mold, and even fire hazards. Our team has found everything from mouse nests behind stoves to mold colonies under dishwashers in homes across Orange Park and St. Augustine. Here's how to tackle these forgotten spaces safely and thoroughly.
Why It Matters in Jacksonville
In our humid climate, the areas behind and under appliances become problem zones fast:
- Pest highway: Gaps behind appliances are the primary travel routes for roaches, ants, and rodents. The warmth from refrigerators and ovens attracts them, and any moisture or food debris sustains them.
- Mold growth: Condensation from refrigerators and plumbing leaks under dishwashers creates mold that spreads to walls and cabinets. Jacksonville's humidity accelerates this dramatically.
- Grease accumulation: Kitchen appliances push warm, greasy air toward walls. The grease film combines with humidity to create a stubborn, sticky layer that attracts more dirt.
- Fire hazard: Lint behind dryers and grease behind ovens are genuine fire risks. The NFPA reports that failure to clean is the leading cause of dryer fires.
Refrigerator: The Big One
Pulling out the refrigerator is intimidating but necessary. Do this every 6 months minimum:
Before You Move It
- Turn the temperature to the coldest setting an hour before β this keeps food cold while the door is closed during cleaning
- Remove items from the top of the fridge
- Clear the floor area where the fridge will be pulled out
- Have someone help you β refrigerators are heavy and awkward
Pulling Out and Cleaning
- Pull straight out: Don't twist or yank. Most fridges roll on wheels or adjustable feet. If it doesn't budge, check if the leveling feet are screwed down.
- Clean the floor: You'll find dust, hair, crumbs, and possibly dried spills. Sweep first, then mop the floor and wall behind the fridge.
- Clean the wall: Wipe the wall behind the fridge with degreaser. The heat from the compressor causes airborne kitchen grease to condense on the wall behind the fridge.
- Clean the sides of the fridge: Wipe both sides that face cabinets. In Jacksonville, humidity makes dust stick to these surfaces like felt.
- Coil cleaning: Vacuum the condenser coils at the back or bottom of the fridge. Dirty coils can add $50-100 per year to your electric bill and shorten the appliance's life by 2-3 years.
- Check the water line: If your fridge has an ice maker, inspect the water line for leaks, kinks, or deterioration. A burst water line behind the fridge can cause thousands in water damage.
- Push back carefully: Leave 2-3 inches of clearance from the wall for air circulation β this is critical in Jacksonville where the compressor already works hard against the heat.
Stove and Oven
- Freestanding ranges: Pull out from the wall (get help β they're heavy). Clean the floor and wall behind. You'll likely find years of dropped food, grease splatter on the wall, and possibly pest evidence.
- Drop-in or slide-in ranges: These are harder to move. Clean what you can reach, and use a long-reach crevice tool for the gaps on the sides.
- Under the oven: Most ovens have a storage drawer at the bottom. Remove it and vacuum the cavity underneath β crumbs and debris fall through gaps and accumulate here.
- Check the gas line: If you have a gas range, inspect the flex line for corrosion or damage. Never use a damaged gas line.
Dishwasher
The area under and around the dishwasher is a prime mold zone:
- Pull out the lower toe kick panel and vacuum underneath
- Check for water stains on the floor β even small leaks cause mold under and behind the dishwasher
- Inspect the water supply line and drain hose for deterioration
- Clean the gaps between the dishwasher and adjacent cabinets β food debris and moisture collect here
- If you see any water damage on the floor or cabinets, you likely have a leak that needs professional repair
Washer and Dryer
- Pull both out: Clean behind and between the machines. Lint, dropped socks, and detergent drips accumulate here.
- Dryer vent: Disconnect and clean the dryer vent from the back of the dryer to the wall. Clogged dryer vents cause over 15,000 fires annually in the US. In Jacksonville's humidity, lint compacts faster.
- Washer hoses: Inspect for bulging, cracking, or deterioration. Burst washer hoses cause an average of $6,000 in water damage. Replace rubber hoses with braided stainless steel lines β they cost $20-30 each and last much longer.
- Check the floor: Water stains or warped flooring indicate past or present leaks
Smaller Appliances
Don't forget the spaces around and under smaller appliances:
- Microwave: Pull forward and clean underneath and behind β grease and food splatter accumulate
- Toaster and toaster oven: Clean the counter underneath β crumbs collect and attract ants, a constant Jacksonville problem
- Coffee maker: Clean underneath and check the counter for water damage from spills
- Trash can area: The floor under and around the trash can needs regular scrubbing β spills, drips, and food particles create odor and attract pests
