Your First Apartment Needs Your First Deep Clean
Moving into your first apartment in Jacksonville is exciting. You've signed the lease, picked up the keys, and you're ready to make it yours. But before you unpack a single box, our team wants you to know this: you need a proper deep clean before you settle in. Because the truth is, no matter how clean it looks, someone else lived here, and the landlord's "cleaning" was almost certainly the minimum effort possible.
At Clean Fix Jax, our team has cleaned hundreds of apartments for new tenants across Jacksonville, and we've seen what the "professional cleaning" between tenants actually looks like. This guide covers everything you need to clean before you unpack β because once your belongings are in place, you won't have access to the surfaces that need it most.
What to Bring: The First Apartment Cleaning Kit
Gather these supplies before move-in day. Total cost at any Jacksonville dollar store or hardware store: $25-40.
- All-purpose cleaner and EPA-registered disinfectant spray
- White vinegar and a spray bottle β Jacksonville's hard water makes vinegar your best friend
- Baking soda for scrubbing and deodorizing
- Sponges and scrub brushes (at least 3 of each)
- Microfiber cloths (at least 10 β you'll use them everywhere)
- Rubber gloves to protect your hands
- Trash bags β you'll find things left behind by the previous tenant
- Toilet bowl cleaner and brush
- Glass cleaner for mirrors and windows
- Mop and bucket
- Vacuum (borrow one if you don't own one yet)
- Oxygen bleach (OxiClean) for grout and stains
- New toilet seat ($15-25) and shower curtain liner ($5)
Clean Before You Unpack
This is the most important rule of move-in cleaning. Once your belongings are in the apartment, you can't access the corners, the cabinet interiors, or the closet shelves. Clean first, unpack second. It takes an extra 3-4 hours, but it's worth it. An empty apartment takes half the time to clean as a furnished one.
Room-by-Room Guide
Kitchen: The Most Important Room
The kitchen is where previous tenants leave the most behind β food residue, grease, and crumbs that attract pests:
- Inside the refrigerator: Remove all shelves and drawers. Wash in the sink with hot soapy water. Wipe all interior walls with a baking soda solution. Clean the door gasket β mold grows in the folds in Jacksonville's climate. Check for odors that indicate deeper problems.
- Inside cabinets: Vacuum first to remove crumbs and debris, then wipe all shelves with disinfectant. You'll find crumbs, dust, and possibly pest evidence.
- Oven and stovetop: Run the self-clean cycle if available. Scrub the stovetop and remove drip pans for soaking. Clean the range hood filter.
- Sink: Scrub with baking soda and vinegar. Remove hard water deposits from the faucet with a vinegar-soaked cloth. Clean the garbage disposal with ice and lemon.
- Dishwasher: Run an empty cycle with vinegar. Check and clean the filter at the bottom.
Bathroom: The Room That Needs the Most Sanitization
- Toilet: Full sanitization β bowl, seat, tank exterior, base, and floor around the base. Replace the toilet seat for peace of mind.
- Shower/tub: Scrub all surfaces with disinfectant. Check grout for mold β treat with oxygen bleach. Replace the shower curtain liner.
- Sink: Clean basin, faucet, and countertop with disinfectant. Descale the aerator by soaking in vinegar.
- Cabinets: Wipe all shelves with disinfectant. Check for pests β Jacksonville apartments almost always have some roach evidence in bathroom cabinets.
- Exhaust fan: Remove the cover and clean it. Test that it works by holding a tissue up to it.
Bedrooms and Living Areas
- Vacuum all carpet β go over each area 3-4 times to remove deep soil
- Wipe closet shelves and rods β the previous tenant left dust and debris here
- Clean light switch plates and outlet covers β remove and wipe behind them
- Dust ceiling fan blades β they accumulate a surprising amount of dust
- Check window sills and clean the tracks where dead bugs and pollen collect
- Wipe baseboards throughout the apartment
Document Everything for Deposit Protection
Before and after cleaning, document the apartment's condition to protect your security deposit:
- Take photos of every room from multiple angles with time-stamped images
- Photograph any existing damage: scratches, stains, cracks, mold, and water damage
- Write a list of issues and email it to your landlord within 48 hours of move-in
- Keep copies of everything β this protects your security deposit when you move out under Florida Statute 83.49
Jacksonville First Apartment Tips
- Check for pests: Look for roach droppings in kitchen and bathroom cabinets. If you find evidence, report it immediately β it's the landlord's responsibility to treat under Florida law.
- Test the AC: Run it for an hour and make sure it cools effectively. In Jacksonville, AC problems are a habitability emergency.
- Inspect for mold: Check bathroom grout, under sinks, and window sills. Mold in a rental is the landlord's problem, but you need to document it at move-in.
- Know your water: Jacksonville's hard water from the Floridan aquifer will affect your hair, skin, and appliances. Consider a shower filter ($20-30) as one of your first purchases.
- Humidity management: Place DampRid containers in closets and cabinets ($5 each). Jacksonville's average humidity of 75% means moisture damage is a real risk.
