First Apartment Move-In Cleaning Checklist

Your First Apartment Needs More Cleaning Than You Think

Congratulations on your first apartment in Jacksonville! Whether you're moving into a complex near UNF, a unit in San Marco, or your first place in Riverside, our team wants you to know something that nobody else will: that apartment is not as clean as it looks.

Property management companies do a quick turnover clean between tenants, but "quick" is the operative word. They're working against a tight schedule and a tight budget, and they clean for appearances, not for health. At Clean Fix Jax, our team has cleaned hundreds of apartments across Jacksonville for new tenants, and we've seen what the "professional cleaning" between tenants actually looks like.

This checklist covers everything you need to clean before you unpack a single box β€” because once your belongings are in place, you won't have access to the surfaces that need it most.

Before You Bring Anything In: The Empty Apartment Clean

Why Cleaning Before Unpacking Is Critical

Cleaning an empty apartment takes half the time and effort of cleaning a furnished one. You have access to every surface, every corner, and every wall. Once your furniture and boxes are in place, you'll never have this access again until you move out. Use this window wisely.

  • Document pre-existing conditions: Before you clean anything, photograph every room, every wall, every fixture, and any damage or wear you see. Email these photos to your landlord with a note documenting the condition at move-in. This protects your security deposit when you move out. Under Florida Statute 83.49, your landlord has 30 days to dispute your documentation β€” if they don't respond, your documentation stands
  • Open all windows and run the AC: Ventilate the apartment before you start. If it's been vacant, the air is stale and may contain dust, cleaning chemical residue, and mold spores. Run the AC on "fan only" for 30 minutes to circulate the air through the filter

The Room-by-Room Move-In Cleaning Checklist

Kitchen: The Most Important Room to Clean

  • Refrigerator: Empty it completely. Remove shelves and drawers, wash them in hot soapy water. Wipe the interior with baking soda solution (2 tablespoons per quart of water). Clean the rubber gasket with vinegar β€” in Jacksonville, mold grows in those folds within weeks of vacancy. Clean the top, sides, and back. Pull it away from the wall and clean the floor behind it
  • Oven: Check the interior. If there's baked-on residue, run the self-cleaning cycle before moving day or clean manually with oven cleaner. Wipe the stovetop, remove drip pans and soak them. Clean under the stovetop where grease collects
  • Cabinets: Wipe every interior shelf with a damp cloth. You'll find crumbs, dust, and possibly pest evidence in the corners. Wipe exterior doors and handles. Line shelves with contact paper for easy future cleaning
  • Dishwasher: Run an empty cycle with white vinegar. Clean the rubber door seal. Remove and rinse the filter
  • Sink and counters: Scrub the sink with baking soda. Wipe all countertops. Clean the backsplash and the area around the faucet
  • Floor: Sweep and mop, including under the stove and refrigerator

Bathroom: Sanitize Everything

  • Replace the toilet seat: This is non-negotiable. $20 and 5 minutes of work. Just do it
  • Shower and tub: Spray with a bathroom cleaner that kills mold. Scrub all surfaces. Treat grout with oxygen bleach paste. Replace the showerhead if it's clogged with hard water deposits β€” Jacksonville's water will do that
  • Sink and mirror: Scrub the sink, clean the mirror, wipe the vanity top and inside the drawers
  • Toilet: Clean inside, outside, around the base, and behind. Clean the tank interior with vinegar
  • Exhaust fan: Pop off the cover and vacuum inside. Test airflow
  • Floor: Sweep and mop with a disinfectant solution

Living Areas and Bedrooms

  • Carpet: Vacuum thoroughly, including edges along baseboards. If the carpet has stains or odors, request professional carpet cleaning from your landlord before move-in, or hire it yourself ($75-$150)
  • Walls: Wipe any visible marks with a magic eraser. Check for mold spots β€” especially in corners near windows and AC vents. Report any mold to your landlord in writing immediately
  • Windows: Clean glass, sills, and tracks. If you're near the beach, salt and sand collect in the tracks
  • Closets: Wipe shelves, vacuum the floor and corners, clean door tracks
  • Ceiling fans and light fixtures: Dust fan blades. Check enclosed fixtures for dead bugs
  • Baseboards, switch plates, door frames: Wipe every one. These take 20 minutes total and make the apartment feel brand new

Budget-Friendly Cleaning Supplies for Your First Apartment

You don't need to spend $100 on cleaning supplies. Here's what to buy β€” total cost approximately $30:

  • White vinegar ($2.49/gallon) β€” cleans glass, removes hard water, kills mold
  • Baking soda ($1.29/box) β€” scrubs, deodorizes, removes stains
  • Dish soap ($2.99) β€” the foundation of most cleaning solutions
  • Spray bottles ($3.99/3-pack) β€” for your cleaning solutions
  • Microfiber cloths ($6.99/12-pack) β€” reusable, effective, machine washable
  • Sponge and scrub brush ($3.99) β€” for bathrooms and kitchen
  • Toilet bowl cleaner ($3.49) β€” get one with a curved nozzle for under the rim
  • Magic erasers ($4.99/4-pack) β€” for walls, baseboards, and scuffs
  • Trash bags ($2.99) β€” you'll generate a lot of trash during move-in cleaning

Jacksonville First Apartment Tips

  • Humidity is your enemy: Get a hygrometer ($10) and monitor humidity levels. Above 60%, mold risk increases. Run your AC or a dehumidifier to keep humidity in the 40-50% range
  • Pest prevention starts now: Before you unpack, check for gaps around plumbing under sinks and around exterior doors. A cockroach can fit through a gap the width of a quarter. Report any gaps to your landlord
  • Know your rights: Under Florida law, your landlord must provide a habitable dwelling. If the apartment has mold, pest infestations, or plumbing problems discovered during your move-in cleaning, document it and notify your landlord in writing within 7 days
