New Countertops Need More Than a Wipe-Down
Whether you installed granite, quartz, marble, or laminate countertops in your Jacksonville home renovation, they need proper cleaning before you prepare your first meal.
Construction leaves behind adhesive residue, sticker film, grout splatters, and fine dust that standard cleaning doesn't address. And the wrong cleaning method can permanently damage your new surface β acid on marble, abrasives on quartz, or bleach on laminate can all cause irreversible harm.
At Clean Fix Jax, our post-construction cleaning includes surface-specific countertop care.
Countertop-Specific Cleaning and Sealing
Granite Countertops
Granite is the most popular natural stone countertop in Jacksonville homes, and it requires both cleaning and sealing after installation:
- Initial cleaning: Remove sticker residue with Goo Gone applied to a microfiber cloth β never apply directly to the stone. Wipe the entire surface with a pH-neutral stone cleaner to remove construction dust and installation residues. Avoid vinegar, bleach, and acidic cleaners β these etch the stone surface
- Sealing: Test whether your granite needs sealing by placing a few drops of water on the surface. If the water beads up, the factory seal is intact. If it absorbs within 5-10 minutes (darkening the stone), sealing is needed. Apply a penetrating granite sealer according to the manufacturer's directions β typically 2-3 coats with 15-30 minutes of drying between each. Wipe off all excess sealer to prevent a hazy residue
- Sealing frequency: In Jacksonville's humid environment, granite countertops should be resealed every 12-18 months. Homes near Jacksonville Beach may need annual resealing due to moisture exposure
Quartz Countertops
Quartz (engineered stone) is non-porous and doesn't require sealing, but it still needs proper post-construction cleaning:
- Initial cleaning: Remove adhesive residue with rubbing alcohol on a microfiber cloth. Wipe the entire surface with warm water and a few drops of mild dish soap. Rinse with a damp cloth and dry with a microfiber cloth for a streak-free finish
- Avoid: Bleach, abrasive pads, and any cleaner containing citric acid. Quartz's resin binder can be damaged by harsh chemicals, causing discoloration and dulling
- Construction-specific issues: Paint splatters on quartz come off with rubbing alcohol. Grout and thinset splatters require a non-acidic cement remover β test in an inconspicuous area first
Marble Countertops
Marble is the most delicate countertop material and requires the most careful post-construction treatment:
- Initial cleaning: Use only a pH-neutral marble cleaner. Never use vinegar, lemon, bleach, or any acidic product β acid etches marble within seconds, creating permanent dull spots. Remove sticker residue with a marble-safe adhesive remover (mineral-spirits-based, not citrus)
- Sealing: Marble is more porous than granite and must be sealed after installation. Apply a penetrating marble sealer in 2-3 thin coats. Test the seal monthly during the first year β marble in Jacksonville bathrooms may need resealing every 6-9 months due to moisture exposure
- Etch removal: If your marble was etched during construction (by acidic cleaning products or spills), a marble polishing compound can restore light etching. Deep etches require professional honing and polishing ($200-500 per countertop)
Laminate Countertops
The most affordable and most common countertop in Jacksonville apartments and budget renovations:
- Initial cleaning: Wipe with warm soapy water. Remove adhesive residue with Goo Gone. Sticker residue lifts easily with rubbing alcohol
- Avoid: Bleach, abrasive scrubbers, and excessive water. Laminate seams are vulnerable to water penetration β never let water pool at seams or edges
- No sealing required: Laminate is non-porous and doesn't need sealing, but avoid cutting directly on the surface and always use trivets for hot items
Protecting Your Countertop Investment
- Use cutting boards always: Even the hardest stone will scratch under knife blades
- Use trivets for hot items: Thermal shock can crack granite and marble, and heat damages quartz's resin binder
- Wipe spills promptly: Especially wine, coffee, citrus, and oils on natural stone
- Reseal natural stone annually: Set a reminder β the $30-50 sealer and 30 minutes of effort prevents thousands in staining damage
