Post-Renovation Cleaning Checklist: Room by Room

Why You Need a Systematic Approach

After any renovation in Jacksonville, the dust goes everywhere. Inside the refrigerator you didn't touch. Behind electrical outlet covers. On top of ceiling fan blades. Inside your HVAC ductwork.

If you try to clean without a system, you'll keep finding dust in new places and re-contaminating areas you already cleaned. That's why our team at Clean Fix Jax always follows a room-by-room, top-to-bottom approach for post-construction cleaning. This checklist is the exact method we use, adapted for homeowners who want to tackle it themselves or understand what professional cleaning should include.

Kitchen Post-Renovation Checklist

Upper Areas

  • Ceiling and light fixtures: Wipe ceiling surfaces to remove dust film. Remove and wash light fixture covers β€” construction dust settles inside them. Clean above-cabinet surfaces where dust accumulates in thick layers.
  • Upper cabinets: Clean the tops of cabinets (that hidden ledge), then wipe all exterior surfaces. Clean inside each cabinet and drawer β€” remove all items, vacuum dust, wipe with damp cloth, and dry completely before restocking.
  • Backsplash and walls: Remove any paint splatter or construction adhesive using appropriate solvent. Wipe entire backsplash with degreaser. Clean wall surfaces from top to bottom.

Mid-Level Surfaces

  • Countertops: Remove all items. Scrape off any paint drips or adhesive residue with a plastic putty knife. Clean with appropriate surface cleaner β€” pH-neutral for granite and marble common in St. Augustine homes.
  • Appliances: Remove protective film and stickers. Clean all surfaces with stainless steel cleaner or appropriate product. Clean inside the oven, refrigerator, and dishwasher β€” contractors often use these during construction.
  • Sink and fixtures: Remove any grout or mortar residue. Descale faucets with vinegar wrap. Clean drain and disposal.

Floor Level

  • Baseboards and trim: Wipe with damp cloth, then dry. Construction dust clings to baseboard tops in thick strips.
  • Floors: HEPA vacuum first, then mop. For tile floors, remove grout haze with a commercial grout haze remover. For hardwood, use only a barely-damp mop β€” excess moisture damages wood in Jacksonville's humid climate.
  • Under appliances: Pull out refrigerator, stove, and dishwasher. Vacuum and mop underneath β€” this is where the heaviest dust accumulates.

Bathroom Post-Renovation Checklist

Shower and Tub Area

  • Grout haze removal: This is the most common post-renovation bathroom issue. Use a grout haze remover or a white vinegar and water solution. Never use bleach on new grout β€” it can weaken the cure.
  • Fixtures: Remove protective caps and stickers. Polish all fixtures, removing any drywall dust that has bonded to chrome surfaces. In Jacksonville's humidity, this bonding happens fast β€” address it within 48 hours of renovation completion.
  • Glass enclosures: Remove any paint or adhesive splatter with a razor blade scraper. Clean inside and out with glass cleaner. Clean the track at the bottom of shower doors.

Surfaces and Fixtures

  • Vanity and countertop: Remove stickers, clean all surfaces, and wipe inside drawers and cabinets.
  • Mirror: Remove any construction film or tape residue. Clean with glass cleaner β€” check for etching from construction chemicals.
  • Toilet: Clean tank, bowl, seat, and base. Check behind the toilet for dust accumulation β€” it collects there heavily during renovations.
  • Exhaust fan: Remove cover, vacuum housing, and wipe the cover. This is critical after construction because a clogged fan cannot remove the moisture that causes mold in Jacksonville bathrooms.

Living Areas and Bedrooms Post-Renovation Checklist

  • Ceiling fans: Use a pillowcase method to trap dust on each blade. Construction dust on fan blades gets redistributed every time you turn it on.
  • Light fixtures: Remove covers, wash in warm soapy water, and dry. Dust inside the fixture housing with a brush attachment.
  • Windows: Clean glass inside and out. Vacuum window tracks β€” they collect enormous amounts of construction dust. Wipe sills and clean blinds or shutters.
  • Outlets and switches: Remove cover plates, vacuum inside the electrical box (dust gets in during drywall work), wipe the cover plate, and replace. Safety first β€” turn off the breaker before removing any cover plates.
  • Baseboards: Wipe tops and fronts with a damp microfiber cloth. Construction dust bonds to the paint on new baseboards if not removed promptly.
  • Walls: Wipe with a barely-damp microfiber mop or cloth. For new paint, wait at least 2 weeks before wiping to allow full curing.
  • Carpet: Professional hot water extraction is essential β€” construction dust embeds deep in carpet fibers and cannot be removed by vacuuming alone. Our carpet cleaning service handles this.
  • Hard floors: HEPA vacuum, then mop with appropriate cleaner. Check corners and edges where dust collects.

HVAC and Air Quality Checklist

This is the most overlooked part of post-renovation cleaning, and in Jacksonville, it's critical. Your HVAC system has been running during construction, pulling dust through every return vent and distributing it throughout your home:

  • Replace all air filters: Use MERV 11 or higher filters. Run the system on "fan only" for 30 minutes after replacing filters to cycle remaining dust.
  • Clean all return and supply vents: Remove vent covers, vacuum inside the duct opening as far as you can reach, wash the covers, and replace.
  • Consider professional duct cleaning: If the HVAC ran without filters during construction, you need professional duct cleaning. Dust in ductwork recirculates every time the system runs.
  • Run air purifiers: Place HEPA air purifiers in renovated rooms and run continuously for 48-72 hours after cleaning.

Garage and Exterior Checklist

  • Sweep and hose down garage floor to remove construction dust and debris
  • Clean exterior windows, siding, and walkways affected by construction
  • Check and clean exterior light fixtures
  • Remove any construction materials stored in the garage or yard
  • Clean the driveway and entry paths β€” construction dust tracks inside on shoes
